FIELD OF DREAMS

My team and I now cultivate 18 hectares of vineyards around Gundelsbach, in the picturesque Remstal region. But back in 2013, I was starting from scratch. Founding a winegrowing estate of my own was the fruition of a childhood dream. There was no winery — nor the burdens that come with it — to inherit from my parents, meaning I was unbound to any convention. It was truly the grandest freedom a winemaker could have. wished for

After positions in the Bottwartal and Remstal, it was in the southern Pfalz that I had my first fateful encounter with organic and biodynamic winegrowing. I returned to the Remstal as a technician in viticulture and oenology. By 2013, I was ready to take my first steps on the path that would lead to the founding of Weingut Leon Gold two years later.

The vineyards, field orchards, paddocks, and the forest to the north are daily sources of inspiration in our labors with nature.

One thing has always been clear to us: If we take something, we must also give something back. Promoting biodiversity in the flora and fauna is a central pillar of our work. We have practiced organic methods since the very start, converting to bio-dynamic in the vineyard and cellar in 2016.

Healthy, humus-rich soils are the foundation we build upon — pure Gold, so to speak. Good wines can only come from healthy soils and a healthy environment. Passion, curiosity, and lived experience are what power us day after day through our labor in the vineyard and cellar. Because we are reminded daily: If you work in harmony with nature, the wine turns to Gold.

TERROIR

Alternating layers of keuper and sandstone shape our vineyards, and by extension our wines. The exposition, elevation, and inclination of the parcels on each site have a direct and entirely individual impact on the stylistics of the wines. We apply these insights into an exploration of the many nuances of our classic varieties.

THE VINTAGE

We produce handcrafted wines. Our goal is to vinify each vintage authentically and honestly -- always. We do so by taking inspiration from nature itself, to encourage a process as natural as possible.

Wild fermentation is conducted in wood and steel, with the wines clarifying naturally and bottled with only minor amounts of sulfur. Origin-driven wines emerge, presenting our region and each specific vintage in an extremely puristic manner.

REIFERAUM

The construction of an estate building in 2018 added an architectural facet to my dreams. The cellar is a perfect space for the craftsmanship of a winemaker's work. It has been designed for multifunctionality, offering room for the musts to ferment into wine with as little intervention as possible.

Fine craftsmanship, trust in natural processes, and patience in particular are essential during this phase. But when given their run, the wines present complexity and a clear sense of place.

TIMING


When working in our primarily steep vineyards, we consciously heed the phases of the moon. They influence growth and vitality in the vines, while the sun directly raises the quality of the grapes through its light and warmth. We never forget to turn our eyes to the sky.
